Welcome to our electronic newsletter. Our mission at Whole Health Resources is to help you achieve radiant health, harmonious emotions and joyful, passionate, abundant living. This ezine will provide information on the relationship between diet, attitudes, environment, lifestyle and well-being.

Every life has meaning and endless potential. Passionate, radiant, healthy living is a possibility for all of us. Many are experiencing barriers to this ideal. It is our mission to help you remove those barriers. The foundation of our philosophy is Holistic and based on the principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Attitudinal Healing, and spiritual philosophies that embrace all people and all life forms.  The contents of this e-newsletter do not serve as a substitute for professional health care.

All of our choices Matter - what we choose to eat, think, feel, and believe; how we relate to others; our life's work; and the rhythm of our life all impact our well-being. If some aspect of your health or life is not working as well as you would like, you have many options. Incorporating therapeutic foods will benefit not only your body, but also your mind, emotions, and spirit. Perhaps you’re more drawn to spiritual work such as meditation or attitudinal healing which will positively impact every aspect of your health and life. Or perhaps some coaching on work-life balance can bring you back to equilibrium. It doesn’t matter where you begin. Now is the best time to make new choices that will create a healthier reality.

The Environment and Our Health

Have you noticed the relationship between the seasons and your personal health? As humans we are part of nature. Our mental outlook, emotional state and physical health flow with the cycles of nature.  With each season there are corresponding organ and emotional relationships.   Smooth seasonal transitions are crucial to our wellness and tend to be times when many experience more intensity in chronic health conditions.  When we attune to climatic changes and live in harmony with them, the seasons will have a profoundly positive effect on our well-being.  Seasonal changes are an opportune time to work on our “whole” health.

Nature affects and influences man.  If we want to maintain good physical, mental, and emotional health, we must change as nature changes.  The amount of ease with which we make seasonal transitions is a good indicator of the state of our health.  Each season, and its related element, plays a role in specific disharmonies in body, mind and emotions.

TCM characterizes Late Summer as a fifth season that reflects the health of stomach, spleen and pancreas.  My featured article will give an overview of what this means in terms of our health.

Indian Summer and Your Health

Indian Summer is a short season at the end of summer and before autumn and contains aspects of every season.   This season reflects the rising of the power of Earth.  It is a time of ripening and maturation, a time when nature is rich and full.  The Earth sustains us, and represents our support and solid roots.  Late summer is a tranquil, secure, peaceful and flourishing time, and these qualities are reflected in our lives at this time.  Our ability to feel stable,  grounded and centered, our resourcefulness and capacity for steady perseverance can be greatly enhanced during this time.

Some IMBALANCES that are likely to be more pronounced during this season include: weak digestion, intestinal gas, distension, poor appetite, dull sense of taste, slow metabolism, diarrhea, constipation, abdominal bloating, poor digestion and assimilation, colitis, IBS, food sensitivities, Candida, viruses, bacteria, parasites, obesity, eating disorders, blood sugar imbalances, hypothyroid, weakened immunity, and dampness leading to joint pain that is fixed in one place.

The Role of Sweets

The sweet taste nourishes the Earth element and related organs, spleen, stomach and pancreas.  Sweets that are characterized as “full” sweets include complex carbohydrates in the form of whole, unprocessed grains, vegetables, and legumes. Most dairy and animal products are considered “full” sweets and are only appropriate when there is extreme deficiency.   “Empty” sweets such as simple sugars and highly refined grains harm this element and its corresponding organs.  “Full” sweets are appropriate in every season.  “Empty” sweets damage spleen, stomach, pancreas and kidneys, and weaken bones and cause hair loss.  “Empty” sweets contribute to obesity, tumors and edema.  They create an acidic condition and deplete mineral resources.  Simple sugars stretch the capacity of the pancreas to maintain consistent blood sugar levels.  They are detrimental to the functioning of the spleen since sugar lowers the body’s resistance to infection and stretches the capacity of the liver to produce antibodies.

Refined flour products are slow to digest and difficult to break down, making one feel heavy and sluggish.

Many physical health problems are caused by simple, refined sugars as are many mental imbalances including depression, anxiety and irritability.  Physical degeneration and many mental extremes are linked to sugar’s depletion of nutrients such as protein, vitamin B, zinc, chromium and manganese, all of which are necessary for mental and emotional functioning.  These nutrient deficiencies are associated with depression, fatigue and low blood sugar.  Often sugar is overeaten in an attempt to stimulate, relax or sedate ourselves.

Foods to Emphasize

Healthy “full” sweets include whole grains, good quality beef, fish and chicken, organic eggs,  sweet brown ricecarrots, cabbage, sweet squashes, nuts, olives, parsnips, spinach, potatoes, sweet potatoes and yams, peas, corn, beets, eggplant, swiss chard, apricots, cherries, chestnuts and grapes.  If you are overweight, many of these should be minimized.  Thin, dry, and/or nervous types greatly benefit from these foods, as do those with low blood sugar.   Click here for our Indian Summer Corn Chowder and Sweet Brown Rice recipes.

Since many imbalances in this element (including obesity) are caused by dampness, it’s best to emphasize these foods:  Amaranth, rye, millet, barley, hato mugi grain, kamut, spelt, romaine lettuce, scallions, alfalfa, turnips, kohlrabi, most hard dark, leafy greens, pumpkin and its seeds, raw goat’s milk, chamomile and pau d’arco teas, and wild blue-green algae.

It’s best to avoid or greatly minimize dairy products, cold food and beverages, raw foods, juices and sweets.  They cause mucus and dampness in the body leading to the above mentioned health conditions.

Some culinary herbs that are helpful include: GINGER for indigestion, intestinal gas; ANISEED for flatulence, nervousness; CARAWAY for indigestion; CLOVE for indigestion, diarrhea and nervousness; CORIANDER for indigestion; FENNEL for intestinal gas, stomach pain, indigestion and nervousness; THYME for nervousness, indigestion, intestinal parasites; ROSEMARY for colitis, intestinal infections, stomachache, gallstones; PEPPERMINT for indigestion, intestinal gas, spasm, nervousness; and SAGE for indigestion and diarrhea.

Include some of these common herbs when cooking soups, grains and vegetable dishes or simmer into a tea.

There are many medicinal herbs for digestive disorders, and a professional herbalist should be consulted.  Call 412.421.7760 to schedule a consultation.

Those with healthy, spleen, stomach, and pancreas are generally responsible, practical and hard working.  They are strong, stable and active, tend to be orderly, have fertile imaginations and excel at some creative activity, and maintain a steady direction in life.  They are steady and resourceful.

General signs of imbalance are characterized by compulsive, frustrated, stuck behavior and cynical, suspicious, skeptical attitudes.  The tendency is toward apathy and depression; self-pity and martyrdom; and shy and withdrawn behavior.  When imbalance is present, one cannot cope with demands placed upon them, and are lacking in the energy to fulfill aspirations and dreams.

Learning  to be more receptive to new ideas, and viewpoints can enhance the health of the digestion organs  .   Cultivate the attitude that “change means there is something better”, thus creating the ability to flow with life’s changes rather than resist them.  Resistance to change is another indicator of weakness in stomach, spleen, and pancreas.

Trusting in life can come by observing how we create (or attract) our realities with our thoughts and attitudes.  Our health and life are a perfect match for our personal beliefs.  When we are experiencing circumstances in our health and life that we do not want, it’s important to examine our beliefs about the subject.  A belief is a thought that we’ve thought over and over until it becomes us.  Our beliefs bring back to us what is most like them.

It’s important to take some time to discover what our patterns of thought are regarding any challenge we are having.  This is probably the most important step in gaining long-term results without struggle.  All problems are our body’s way of letting us know that there are false beliefs in our consciousness.  Something we are thinking, believing and speaking is not working to serve our highest good.  Awareness of thoughts and beliefs is an important step.  Begin to take responsibility for everything in your life.  Our thoughts, attitudes and personal lives are intertwined with the limitless and infinite divine realm where all possibilities exist. This is not a happy realization for many because it implies responsibility for one’s reality.  It means standing on one’s own two feet.

Decide how you want to experience life.  Make a commitment to yourself, and keep your focus on those things that you really want.  Our lives will be what we believe they will be.  We’re in charge and it starts in our minds.

Attitudinal Healing Counseling is geared toward resolving negative and unhealthy mental, emotional, attitudinal, and spiritual states.  More importantly, you will discover the positive value of the situation and move beyond it to a better reality.  Doing so will bring resolution to all types of challenges.  Take advantage of our offer for a free 30 minute Attitudinal Healing Session by phone or in our Pittsburgh office.  To schedule, call 412.421.7760 or send an email to health@wholehealthresources.com.

Unity and harmony are important themes during this season in order to establish radiant physical and emotional health.   We are all intimately connected to each other, to all of life, and to a larger “whole”.   There is no separation between any of us or the Divine. Many believe in the idea of separation and this causes much unnecessary pain and suffering.

When we look at all people and all of life as a reflection of ourselves, we’ll find many undiscovered parts of ourselves.  Some of these discoveries can be quite beautiful and magnificent.  Others may show us our “blocks” or parts of ourselves that we do not like. Living from a unified principle with a sincere desire to deeply know ourselves can cause much healthier relationships, joyful living, emotional harmony, and radiant health.

Everything in life has a spiritual component.  Learn to see the spiritual in everything and use it to uplift yourself and others. Doing so brings peace, joy and happiness.

Cultivate and put into practice understanding and compassion and direct these qualities toward yourself and others. Living from these and other spiritual qualities will harmonize body, mind, emotions, and spirit.

The earth element gives us the power of material manifestation through our physical and mental labors, particularly creative endeavors such as writing a book, drawing, painting, photography, music, and others.  This is a fertile time for birthing our creative projects and receiving the financial and material rewards of these endeavors.  With perseverance, confidence, and a plan that is consistently worked, our dreams are likely to be actualized during this Season.

An imbalance in the Earth element can cause one to be sloppy, disorderly, and accumulate useless possessions, all of which cause “inner” clutter and stagnation.  By clearing clutter and creating order we strengthen our condition, and create new energy within ourselves to fulfill our aspirations and dreams.  Create a plan for clearing away clutter.  Spend consistent time daily on this.  Looking at the big picture can cause non-action and overwhelm.  15-20 minutes a day can create order in less time than you think as well as a more positive outlook, improved focus and clarity, and vitality.

Being physically active helps to active our energy, and, coupled with a healthy diet, will create the focus needed to restore radiant health, confidence to fulfill our dreams, harmonious emotions, and a life we love.  Get outdoors.  Spend time in the natural environment.  Walk, hike, bike, and practice deep breathing.  Being in nature can strengthen our stability and sense of being grounded and centered.  Sing, dance, laugh, and play.  Engage in other activities that enliven you.

I

My background is in Traditional Chinese Medicine which sees the body/mind/emotion/spirit as intimately connected, each aspect influencing the other. I am also a trained Facilitator in Attitudinal Healing. Attitudinal Healing is a process of uncovering personal beliefs and attitudes that prohibit healing any aspect of ourselves. It helps one gain an understanding of how negative or unhealthy states can work for us, rather than against us. You will create harmony, balance and strength through personal conflicts.

Counseling utilizes dietary therapy, attitudinal healing and herbal/supplement guidance. Programs are customized based on your health condition, constitutional strengths and weaknesses, age, and lifestyle. Coaching will guide you toward clarity in your thinking, empower you to remove obstacles and make changes necessary to reach your goals, teach you creative problem solving, and give you accountability in an environment where you are fully listened to in a non-judgmental way.

FREE initial session (30-40 minutes) can be done by phone or in my Pittsburgh office. Offer expires, September 25, 2004. Call 412.421.7760 or send an email to health@wholehealthresources.com to schedule. CLICK HERE for Counseling/Coaching, and Attitudinal Healing information.
